General Questions

How can I find out more about the JIARE Funding programme?

We suggest that you first write to the Secretary of the Committee to obtain information pack, which gives details about JIARE funding programmes. If you have any further queries please contact JIARE at info@jiare.org

Can I obtain funding for my research project?

There is currently no responsive funding stream available within JIARE Programmes. This means that the lower case programme does not offer grants or funding to other people's projects. Instead, calls for research proposals are made on priority issues identified through the Evaluation Exercises and other consultation processes. Calls are advertised in the International Academies Bulletin, many International Journals and other relevant media.

If you can't fund my project can you give me information on organisations that can fund my project?

Depending upon your country of residence, one option is to contact your Ministry of Health and get information on funding opportunities. For example, in the UK, the Department of Health website has information on different research programmes. In particular, the R&D info (www.dh.gov.uk) - A digest of health related research funding and training opportunities. This database contains details of over 1850 awards from at least 500 funding sources and covers all areas of healthcare research. It is updated daily by the Leeds Consortium for Research in Healthcare (comprising the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and the University of Leeds, UK). Other media includes national newspapers, journals and periodicals.

I'm interested in a particular research area- can you tell me if you are doing anything on it?

For information on JIARE Programmes commissioned projects please contact the Awards Manager at  info@jiare.org. You would be sent JIARE Grants Book, which provides details of all the grants and awards funded by the Academy.

How do I go about becoming a peer reviewer for the JIARE?

Peer review is a crucial part of JIARE commissioning process. If you are interested in becoming a peer reviewer please contact: Commissioning Manager, at info@jiare.org. You would be sent a questionnaire to complete. Completed questionnaires will be added to JIARE peer review database and reviewers contacted when needed. Peer reviewers will be called upon no more than once a year to review a maximum of four proposals. They may also be asked to review final reports from completed projects.

Questions on Submitting a Proposal

Who is allowed to submit proposals - is it just people in universities or teaching hospitals?

Anyone, anywhere in the world who considers that he/she can carry out high-quality research and educational programmes can submit a proposal. They need not belong to any university or teaching hospital, as long as they have the qualifications, abilities and skills to carry out the research.

Do you fund research in any country?

Researchers based in any country in the World are welcome to submit proposals. Successful applicants are selected on the basis of quality, relevance and appropriateness of their proposal rather than geographical location.

Can I ask for the deadline for proposal submission to be delayed for me?

Unfortunately we cannot entertain requests for an extension of time, in order to maintain equality in our procedures for any candidate submitting a proposals.

I don't understand the Commissioning Brief - can I talk to someone about it?

Please contact the Committee Secretary at info@jiare.org in order to obtain the policy document on the commissioning process. This is a comprehensive document, which sets out details of how to commission various grants and awards.

Do you give feedback on unsuccessful proposals?

We operate on three stage process in our proposals. Due to the volume of applications we cannot give feedback on full proposals that have been screened out before peer review. In a two or three stage process, outline proposals that progress past screening and are considered by JIARE commissioning group, but not then selected for submission AS a full proposal, or the third stage of interview in case of Senior Academic or Senior Research Fellowship Awards, are provided with outline feedback. Feedback is given on full proposals, which have been peer reviewed. This feedback includes peer review comments and brief comments from the relevant commissioning group of JIARE Programme Board.

I want to do research on a part of what the Brief Research covers (e.g. Mental Health, Respiratory Diseases) - is this allowed?

You would need to justify fully your position in the text of your proposal. However, you need to bear in mind that a common reason given for proposals failing at the outline stage is that they do not fully address the Commissioning Brief.

Does my proposal have to be for the full monetary amount detailed in the advert?

No, we're looking for value for money and your proposal should reflect the true cost of your project. However, it must not exceed that amount stated in the call for proposals.

How long will I have to wait to hear whether I have been successful in my application?

For one-stage proposals applicants should normally hear within 10 weeks of submitting a proposal if they have been successful. The timeframe for two-stage or three stage proposals is detailed in the Commissioning Brief, for each call.

At what rate does JIARE Programme pay overheads?

As a charitable organisation, JIARE does not pay overheads for most research projects. However, there are exceptional circumstances where overheads are paid. For example, in Research Fellowships and Senior Academic Awards, and some Educational Support Grants, overheads are paid at the rate of 5% to 10% of the cost of salaries. The rate of overhead will depend on the candidates circumstances.
